Question: My Dr. is giving me tests on my thyroid. All of tests in the hospital said it was normal but my blood tests have been abnormal for the past six months--They say half is high and half is low. I am 84 and have been in good health most of my life. My husband died 10 years ago. After that, I fell and broke my hip and after 2 operations, I haven't been too active. That was 5 years ago. Now I have a lot of arthritis and have to have cataracts removed & can't see to type my symptoms. I am sorry. I will probably die of old age before I can tell you my symptoms. I have lost a lot of lbs.-- 160 to 115 since February. My hair is getting thin. I itch a lot and am very tired, I don't sleep and nothing tastes good. I am so sorry to be so slow. What are some other symptoms? I have a lot more My skin is leathery. My tongue seems larger than it used to. Are you still awake? Thank you for your patience. I had several tests on 2 very large machines, an x-ray, breathing and swallowing tests and an ultrasound and many blood tests. I have lost my balance and have fallen 3 times and have split my head open each time and had to have 10 stitches in 2 of them.

Brief Answer:
Possible hypothyroidism along with nutritional deficiency.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Some of the symptoms appear to be age related, however, most of them can be attributed to hypothyroidism. Thyroid usually affects multiple systems, and needs evaluation.
2. Hypothyroidism can affect the whole body, slowing down mentation, affecting balance and tiredness. Loss of weight, can be attributed to nutrition, mostly.
3. I do need to know the various tests, if i can give any opinion. The thyroid test results are the most important ones now.
4. Loss of balance, fall and already a previous hip fracture are difficult symptoms and can be very dangerous and even life threatening. Balance training, walking stick, care taker support is very important. Also passive physical exercises through a physiotherapy program, will be helpful.
5. Also improve your hydration. Take good amount of water. Nutritional supplements is essential as B-complex deficiency appears to be coexisting. Vit C & D, Calcium and B-complex supplements needs to be taken.

Test results are essential. Also need to look into medications. Do get back with further details.

Hope it helps.
