Posted on Mon, 6 Oct 2014
Question: Hi there
I had hernia repair surgery on the right hand side on August 25 with a spermatocele removed on the left hand side.
The hernia repair location is really swollen and hard, is this normal, and when will it go down?

Brief Answer:
This is normal..would take several weeks to heal!!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this hernia that you had and happy to know it has been taken care of. Swelling after surgery is expected but I am a bit concerned why this has lasted up to 16days after the surgery unless there are no signs of inflammation like pain, hot to touch or possible failure like progressive increase in size. I will suggest that you get it examined by your surgeon to make sure it represents inflamed skin tissue and not deep within that may represent a complication linked to surgery.

If this swelling doesn't change in size, is not tender and not hot to touch, then this would most likely represent fibrotic tissue being produced for wound healing. This usually disappears over a longer period of time like several weeks.

In all, if it is just hard and swollen, there is no big fear. However, it would take longer to heal in weeks-months. If you have pain, changing size, etc, get it examined right away.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Brief Answer:
Patience, yes!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for following up with me.

Exercise more patience and we would be able to understand more of just anything ongoing. For now, I have no particular further concerns that this could be a possible complication that needs immediate attention.

I hope this helps. I wish you well and would be pleased to address any more concerns should you have any.
