Question: My son-in-law has had a severe headache for 3 days, hot and cold flashes, swollen glands, photophobia and mouth sores. He is a healthy 33 year old who is seldom ill. He hasn't been able to get out of bed since he's been ill. Tylenol and ibuprofen only dull the pain a bit. He said his neck was stiff the first 2 days but better now.

Brief Answer: Needs evaluation... Detailed Answer: Hi, Your son-in-law seems to be suffering from an infection. I would order set of investigations to rule out meningitis. Since there is no high grade fever, it is most likely from viral cause - viral infection / viral meningitis. In my opinion, he should consult a physician soon. Complete hemogram, ESR, Brain MRI and if needed a spinal tap (CSF analysis) is in order. Until then he should drink plenty of fluids, take fruits and vegetables and continue tylenol three times a day. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications. Regards
