What Causes Heaviness And Tenderness In Breast After D And C Procedure?

How are you doing? As mentioned to you in my previous email, after my D&C I had an unusual period. I had spotting for almost a week. However, the next cycle seemed normal to me. I had normal period. I was really relieved.
This is my second cycle after D&C and I am waiting for my period again.
In the meantime, I have a question. I am expecting my period to be somewhere between 5-7th Feb. I think I am suffering from PMS. I find my breasts heavy and tender. Also, last night I slept on one side and so when I woke up this morning, I found a spot of secretion from that side of the breast. I squeezed both nipples just to check and I did find a really small drop of secretion from both of them. I am not a new mother and so not lactating. I just wanted to know if this is normal or abnormal. Your inputs would help me.
I am scheduled for my regular gyneac check today and will update you about that also.
Kind regards,
XXXX
Normal as long as it is once in a while, get prolactin level checked.
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX
It is indeed nice to hear from you after a short while.
And it is even more nice to hear that you are having a good 2015 in terms of that irregular bleeding.
Yes, as expected, the periods normalize within 3 months of having the D and C.
A small amount of secretion is common due to various reasons - stress, lack of sleep, travelling, pressure and squeezing of the breasts, transitional hormonal changes etc.
You just need to get your Serum Prolactin levels checked, sometimes they are raised, leading to this condition.
Have your OB - GYN examine your breasts, and get a blood Prolactin level done.
As long as this workup is fine, there is no cause for worry.
Unless the discharge is a regular feature / noticeable daily, there is nothing to worry.
Let me know how it goes.
Take care.

Thank you for your response. I have visited my GYN today for regular check. As far as vaginal ultrasound is concerned, she said everything was OK.
She has checked the breast discharge by squeezing and it was milky. Hence, she wants to do a prolactin level check and also an ultrasound.
During the last 2 - 3 weeks I was under a lot of stress and I had also travelled. I wonder if it can be due to that.
I am also wondering what will it mean if the prolactin levels are high. Does it require any further tests or is there any medication.
Regards,
XXXX
Explained.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
Yes, if it is milky, then that means raised prolactin levels.
A breast ultrasound and prolactin level is essential.
Stress and travelling are two leading causes.
There is also something called Idiopathic hyper prolactinemia ( means raised prolactin levels due to no obvious reason ).
Rarely, a tumor in the pituitary gland can cause it.
But I would not have you worried unnecessarily.
More than 90% of cases are due to stress or idiopathic.
First get the work up suggested and we can take it from there.
If prolactin levels are high, yes, further tests are done to rule out any sinister causes, and then treatment is in the form of medication.
If there is no ominous cause, then a 3 - 6 month course of medication corrects the condition.
Will look forward to hearing from you with the reports.
Take care

I was just thinking about why I got a milky secretion. It is around 1.5 years since I stopped breast feeding my baby. In addition to lot of stress and travelling during the last 2-3 weeks, I recently started taking a dose of fish oil capsule every day for Omega 3 supplements. I am just thinking, if fish oil can lead to this condition. I have now stopped it just to be careful (although there is no evidence that it can promote milk supply).
Your thoughts would definitely be helpful.
Kind regards,
XXXX
Fish oil supplements cannot cause this.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
Fish oil supplements would not lead to this.
I think it is the combination of the stress and travelling.
Let us wait for the workup so that the picture clears.
Take care.
