What Causes Heavy Foul Smelling Whitish Vaginal Discharge?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Oct 2016
Question: Thelse past 2 weeks I've noticed a white clumpy discharge which had no odor but just this past weekend I have noticed a strong fishy odor. I assumed it to be yeast infection, I have had a fair share of those from sports, so I have been treating myself for 2 days now with a yeast infection kit and just want to make sure I am going about this right. From using the kit in these past days I've noticed less discharge but the smell is still present but I also experience some cramping
. I also have a IUD and just this past weekend as well my nipples have become extremely tender I just want to know if I am treating this correctly

Brief Answer:
This sounds more like bacterial vaginosis...

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for the question. The most common causes of a vaginal discharge include:

1. Yeast infection - whitish discharge, sometimes clumpy, usually associated with itching and no odor

2. Bacterial vaginosis - increased discharge, not clumpy, usually associated with odor (often described as fishy). Commonly worse with unprotected intercourse (reacts with semen)

While it is possible that you have a little of both (because you are slightly better with treating for yeast) it sounds like it started as BV and this is the most bothersome persistent symptom. None of the yeast medications will work to treat BV. You need:

1. A prescription for Metrogel (METRONIDAZOLE) - a cream that is administered twice daily for 5 days
2. You will need to contact you doctor for a prescription or consider going into a Planned Parenthood or similar clinic.

I hope that this helps!
