Brief Answer:
Extremely elevated blood pressure requires ER

Detailed Answer:
Good morning. Unfortunately, the speed at which questions are answered is variable and dependent upon the number of physicians on at any given time and what other questions are being answered.

However, with your blood pressure being that high my best advice to you if things are not improving is that you need emergency intervention with IV medications to bring that down. If you don't get that down quickly your risk of heart attack or stroke are very high. I would either get to an ER right away by way of a family member or friend or if you have neither to simply call 911.

Stop taking Tylenol because you are just going to exacerbate your headache. I don't know if your headache is tied to the blood pressure or not. But the most important thing is to get that pressure down.

Please let me know how your pressure is going....if by chance the pressure has started to come down while you've been waiting and you have no other symptoms of chest pain, shortness of breath, radiating pains from the chest to the shoulders or into the arms, or palpitations in the chest then, you do not necessarily need to go to an ER but first thing in the morning I would call your doctor's office and see if they can get you in or at least make an appointment for next week.

Good luck.

Thank you for responding. Yes, it stayed high most of the night. At the moment, my blood pressure is 158/89 and my headache is very minimal. I will call my primary care physician on Monday and make an appointment. If it goes back up this weekend, I will have my husband take me to the ER. Thank you for your advice.

P.S. What should I take for my headache if it comes back?

Brief Answer:
Thank you for the update

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the update. Glad that your pressure came down without any other complications. Any clue as to why it would suddenly elevate like that? Had you ingested any type of drug or chemical compound? Does your pressure do that sort of thing on occasion or what exactly does your doctor say? Or was this the first time? If it was a first time then, it should definitely be investigated as that should not spontaneously happen.

If it does happen like that again today or tomorrow don't spend time trying to get answers from this network or others just head to the ER (and frankly, I'd do it by 911- that way you get INTO the ER without having to wait hours like everyone in the waiting room does). With pressures like you were having and a headache to go with it, it's completely justified to "jump the line!"

Sounds like the headaches are tied to the pressure so if it happens again the treatment for the headaches will be LOWERING THE BLOOD PRESSURE, nothing else will take the headache away and in fact, could make it worse.

If you feel the information I provided you last evening and today was valuable would you do me the favor of leaving some written feedback along with a STAR RATING. Also, if you don't have any further questions then, by CLOSING THE QUERY on your end you will do me a favor so the network can process, archive, and credit the case for future reference and I'd thank you for that.

If you ever want to send questions directly to my attention you may look me up at the following website:

I'll get messaged immediately if you do it this way and chances are you won't wait nearly as long to see a response as you did last night.

This query as well as last evening's took a total of 27 minutes of physician specific time to review, research, and respond in final draft format for envoy.
