What Causes High Calcium Levels?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Apr 2015
Question: I just got my calcium score -- it is 476. I'm freaking out. My doctor said it is a wake-up call, but seemed very laid back about it. Everything I've read says I'm at high risk for heart attack. I'm on 10mg of a statin drug...my doctor says lose weight. Shouldn't I have further testing to see if there are any dangerous blockages?

Brief Answer:
High calcium level may be due to many reasons.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

First you should reconfirm the findings.
High calcium level may be due to many reasons.
It is important to exclude all possibilities. You need proper clinical evaluation and investigations.
Increased calcium level may be due to thyroid problem, medicines, renal problem, malignancy etc.
High calcium level doesn't necessarily mean high risk of heart attack.

You need clinical correlation and investigations.Investigations include routine hemogram, random blood sugar, liver function test, renal function test, urine RE/ME,ultrasound of abdomen and thyroid gland,PTH estimation, chest X-ray (PA view).
Further investigations can be done if needed.

Proper treatment depend upon findings.

WE can't presume dangerous blockages based on these findings.

You should continue taking medicines.

Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your question.
Further queries are most welcome.
