                                    Brief Answer:
Fever, cephalexin, 6 month old
Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome
I appreciate your concern
If the child is active in between the spells of high grade fever and is not irritable, with toxic look and lack of energy then its likely that its a viral infection. In majority of cases, its the cause. However, if cephalexin is prescribed then it means that your doctor did isolate a focus of infection, most likely a lower respiratory tract infection. You should continue the cephalexin and give Paracetamol or tylenol at 15mg/kg/dose every 6-hours for high grade fever.
So, in short, continue cephalexin for next 24 hours. If the fever spikes in the same pattern despite treatment, the following investigations must be considered in consult with your doctor.
CBC, ESR/CRP, Chest X ray and blood cultures. Intensive monitoring can be done in terms of oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, perfusion/cyanosis.
Based on these investigations, broad spectrum antibiotics can be administered parenteral preparations.
You may discuss these options with your GP / pediatrician.
Wishing you best of health
Thanks
