Question: I take Prodaxa and amiodorone for an episode of afib when I had pneumonia last year. My pusle runs higher than I'd like. resting sometimes 95. How do I lower this. only with meds?
Brief Answer:
Thyroid
Detailed Answer:
Amiodarone can often lead to thyroid problems as it contains large amounts of iodine in it.
The excess iodine load the body is exposed to can have harmful effects on the thyroid. It can have various types of outcomes, sometimes make it overactive and other times under active, and it can be either temporary or permanent.
The reason I am deliberating over the effect of amiodarone on the thyroid is that when the thyroid is over active, it tends to cause a high pulse rate as one of its cardinal manifestations.
So I strongly suggest you check your TSH level. It is a simple blood test, that does not require any fasting and can be performed at any time of day. Often it is desirable to add a free T4 test to the same blood sample.
Further since you are on dexamethasone, I would recommend checking your blood glucose levels too, as dexamethasone can elevate glucoses in the body and induce diabetes
