Posted on Mon, 17 Oct 2016
Question: walking causes pain in my hip. after a week or two it gradually goes away. should I have an mri to determine the cause before it no longer goes away?

I should mention that I do 8 to 20 mile bike rides at the same time walking causes pain in the hip and the bike rides do not hurt the hip - feel fine after a bike ride - until I do routine walking

Brief Answer:
I need to have little more detail of the illness

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case. Pain in hip joint can be due to nerve compression or hip arthritis. But as you have pain during walking only so chances of nerve compression is high. Before I advised you anything I would like to know little detail of the illness.
1.Since when you are having this pain?
2.Do you have tingling or numbness in back of thigh?
3.Do you have thyroid, Diabetes or smoking habit?
Please send me answers of these questions. I will try my best to help you.
thanks

I have had this problem for several years, but it only occurs once or twice each year and clears up in a couple of weeks.
Yes, I do have sharp split second pains in the back of my thigh.
No thyroid or diabetes. Never smoked. I do have hypoglycemia, self controlled, no problems.

Will the nerve compression problem get worse?
Is there a cure for this problem?
How do you recommend I handle this problem?

Brief Answer:
You need to get MRI of the spine to confirm the diagnosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I would suggest you to get MRI of the spine to confirm the diagnosis. If there is disc herniation and nerve compression then it can be treated with following.
1.Tablet Lyrica one daily.
2.Back muscle strengthening exercises.
3.Avoid any jerky activity or forward bending.
4.In case disc herniation is more then fifty percent and pain is not controlled then you need to show it to spine specialist as there may be need of surgery.
thanks
