What Causes Hives When Touching Certain Plants And Insects?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Dec 2014
Question: I would like to ask what causes some people to be more attracted by insects like Midges, Mosqitoes and Flies. And also more likely to be sensitive to plants.

I have a situation where I get reactions easily from most garden plants I brush against, with slight hives.

At the moment I am unable to go outside (even during daytime) as I am guaranteed to be bitten (unseen) and have small bumps on arms and legs that get itchy. A few years back I had to move within months from one home because it became so bad I looked like I had major disease and this took a year to heal properly.

I want to understand if there is anything medical one can do to fight against this "attractive skin" and reduce the reactions. I have used creams but it is not practical to have them on 24x7 nor the body clothed fully....especially with 40deg celcius summer at the moment in Australia.

Please note this has all occurred in recent 10 years and my first 30 years of life I didn't have this pattern.

Brief Answer:
Urticaria

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query,
You might have developed acute urticaria.
It is an allergic condition.
Anything including food, cloth, change in climate, pollens etc can cause urticaria.
You need to find out the cause.
Treatment can be with oral anti histamines.
Steroids like prednisolone are also helpful but cannot be used for long.
Flies get attracted towards carbon di oxide and towards those who sweat more.
However there is no medical management for this.
Let me know if you have any other doubt.
Thank you

Why do I get bitten by midges and mosqitoes....but the rest of the household are left alone?

I understand developing an allergic condition, as moving away from farms helped improve my life considerably.

However is there anything that makes one human bitten constantly over others. Is that treatable?
