What Causes Hot Flashes And Panic Attacks When Diagnosed With Degenerative Disc Disease?

Question: I am a 42 year old female - Diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse 12 years ago. I also have a history of panic attacks. I recently went on cruise a month ago where I was prescribed the Transdermal Scolopamine patch due to sea sickness. I began to have an adverse reaction to the patch in the form of blurry vision and fatigue. I did not realize that was due to the patch. I wore the patch for 4 days before removing it. Within 12 hours of removing the patch I began to have chest pains, shaking, heart palpitations and anxiety. I did not know this could be a side effect of the patch. 24 hours after that began I ended up in Urgent Care. I had an EKG that came out clear. The fatigue, chest pains, dizziness and nausea I felt post patch lasted approx a week until last night. I am now shaky, weak, heart is racing and have terrible chest pain. I have shortness of breath that comes and goes but have battled that my entire life. I feel very strange. I have tingling sensations in my neck and jaw that come and go but I am not nauseated, vomiting or sweating. the pain comes and goes but I feel as though I have swallowed a softball and it is lodged under my breast bone in the middle of my chest where the bones meet. My OBGYN removed me from my hormone replacement therapy 3 weeks ago. I have a degenerative disc disease and regularly take Celebrex as needed. I own a salon and work full time so my stress level is high.

Brief Answer:
These are hormone related and called hot flashes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these symptoms that you have reported. These are suggestive of hot flashes which are common in women going through menopause. With your hormonal replacement stopped recently, this is one of the most possible explanations. Get your doctor to know about this. The other possibility is anxiety or panic attacks. This would have been the first if you had no hormonal issues. However, they are plausible causes of these symptoms.

In all, talk to your OBGYN. This is probably related to the hormones. Also, anxiety and panic attacks should be investigated and manage appropriately.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
