What Causes Hypoglycemia In An Infant?

My baby girl is now 60 Hrs of age, she had a low birtg weight of 2 KGs and was being diagnosed with Hypoglycemia. Plz confirm how long is this to be monitored as she has been given many pricks multiple times to check blood sugar till 12 in the last night which was observed to be >50 sometimes even 65 but last one was 56.
Also we have to feed her forcibly after every two hours by atleast 20 Mls of NAN 1. Plz confirm if it is ok and also what nees to be checked. her skin colour aas well as her feet colour is ok.
Does not need further monitoring

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. The first question that I need to ask is whether the child is still in the hospital. Low birth weight babies do not have adequate maturity and therefore can often be unable to maintain adequate blood sugar levels thus leading to hypoglycemia. However, after feeds are given the blood sugar levels usually catch up. Once the catch up occurs, there is no further cause for concern. A blood sugar level of 50 or 65 mg/dl is satisfactory and if the baby is otherwise active no further monitoring of blood sugar levels is needed. Breast feeding every two hours is advisable. You are not supposed to be able to measure how much you are breast feeding. You only measure when you are giving top feeds. I would just insist you to resume breast feeding the baby normally and I hope that things would be fine.

we have been discharged from hospital after 48 hrs of babys birth..Rest parameter have been found to be satisfactory. she is breathing well.
We are feeding her NAN1 of 20 ml every two hours as she hasnt been able to suck her mothers breast and her mother also has less milk but yes we do make her take mothers milk like of two spoons taking nilk forcibly using pump from mother.
plz confirm if we are going on the right track..
Exclusive breast feeding is the best.
Detailed Answer:
Let me emphasize on the fact that breast milk is the best possible milk for a baby and there can be no alternatives for the same. Most formula milks are cow milk based and hence difficult to digest. Moreover they make the child more prone to complications and infections. Mother's breast milk is produced on the demand of the baby. Hungrier the baby, more vigorous is the suck. More is the suck, more is the amount of breast milk produced. Giving formula automatically reduces the demand of the baby and thereby the production of breast milk. Even though you are giving NAN-1, try to switch back. All you need to do is to switch back to exclusive breast feeding and the production will increase automatically. All you need to do is to monitor the urine output. If the frequency is more than 6 times in 24 hours, you would know that the amount of feeding is adequate. If the amount of passage of urine is less or if the child is lethargic you would need to take the child to a doctor without delay.
