What Causes Inability To Get Up While Having Treatment For Enterococcus Faecium?

Posted on Mon, 8 Dec 2014
Question: Good morning Dr. ...My wife was in XXXXXXX ( NZ) from 20th to 31st October, due to a " Runaway " E.Coli Infection which failed o respond to CEFACLOR treatment. Now she has been diagnosed with Enterococcus Faecium,(EF) which is being treated with Amoxicillin. I have been " Googling" and among other facts , have discovered that EF is often caused by Catheterisation. My wife was Catheterised in the Hospital from day one, as she cannot rise from a sitting position, and it took 3# Nurses to get her to the Toilet and back. I am feeding her dried Cranberries, Sugar Free Cranberry Juice and Cranberry Capsukles. Should I get a Post Treatment urine test done , after the 7# day course of Amoxycillin ? Have you any recommendations ? Regards, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Are her urinary symptoms gone?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what your wife is experiencing. If her urinary symptoms are greatly reduced following treatment, there would be no reason for control. However, if they fail to get well controlled, I will suggest that we get a control urinalysis to understand more about her state.

Cranberry juice has been shown to help with urinary tract infections. I have no reasons to recommend against. Carry on and report progress to me.

I hope this helps. I wish you well Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Good morning from New Zealand Dr.Ditah,
Many thanks for your answer. The Symptoms were :- cloudy urine, failure to be able to stand from her wheelchair to a Transfer Frame called a Steady XXXXXXX (!) and general lethargy. There was no pain at any time, and no symptoms were noticed by my wife. What symptoms she had have waned substantially. This I only her second day on Amoxycillin. I should have explained before, that XXXXXXX is almost Paraplegic, being that she suffered a Stroke and Basilar Fusiform Aneurism in 1991; then a Heart By-pass Op. in 2003, which was done by a Surgeon (Chen ) in Auckland Hospital...the grafted Arteries have since atrophied, and Chen has been dismissed, having ripped $ 250K from Auckland hospital Board, and was found to be unqualified ( ! ); then XXXXXXX had a Shunt Replacement in 2010, which should have been done about 2004 ! I believe she gained her current Infection while in Hospital ! Thanks again for your answer .Regards, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Thankou! y!I recommend we complete the treatment!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

It must have been a long and tedious task since 1991. I wish you well and pray you get all the courage to face the challenges as they arise.

I recommend we finish the treatment. God willing, it would address the infection and get her going again. If anything new comes up, please let me know so that we can look into it together and see what needs to be done.

Are the surgeons saying anything more about the atrophied grafted arteries? My regards and love to her. Tell her she's brave to have battled through all these for so many years.

Keep me posted and fel free to request for more information if need be.
