Question : I am a person that don't drink a while lot, and I been an bp medication for almost five years. I have had problems with urine retention in the past, but not like it is today. I will have to set on the stool back and forward for about two hours until urine comes and then it's only a small amount. Can dehydration over the years be the reason this is happening. Other than the retention really there is no problem.... my blood pressure medication is Bisoprl/hctz2.5/6.25mg. I haven't taken any in three days. Any idea

Brief Answer:
This is not urinary retention!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this difficulty urinating and all the inconveniences this has caused you. I have reviewed your symptoms and they are not suggestive of urinary retention.

Urinary retention refers to the inability to urinate while the bladder is full. When you get to urinate, the amount of urine volume is huge and generally more than 500ml and that is what qualifies it as urinary retention.

My thinking is that you have a false sensation that the bladder is full and you ned to urinate of which that is not the case. This is not caused by dehydration. Dehydration might cause kidney problems that can manifest as low urine production but not urinary retention.

For some reasons, you are getting false signals that you need to urinate. There are few disease conditions such as irritable bladder that may cause this. I will suggest you get urination evaluation studies to see if there are any abnormal and unexpected signals that get sent when the bladder is empty.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Brief Answer:
I suggest that you get urodynamic studies!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your worries. However, your symptoms do not point to a specific disease condition and more information is needed. I strongly recommend you get urodynamic studies which look at how the bladder fills up, how impulses are generated to production the urination urge and how urination goes on. This way, we will identify the exact problem and address. I cannot call this urinary retention without severe pain and no huge volumes when you finally get to urinate.

A urologist is the best per on to talk to about this. Let me know what your thoughts are.
