What Causes Increased Heart Rate While Arising From A Seated Position?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Sep 2017
Question: I was wondering if it's normal to have your heart rate jump from say 60 laying down to 115 upon standing but then it settles within seconds back to about 70. What's a normal jump range from sitting to standing?

Brief Answer:
It should not vary this much

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

After going through the medical details provided by you I would like to tell you that ideally it should not happen. But before running into anything else I would like to suggest you to get the medical device checked first with which you are measuring your heart rate.

If the device is normal then I would like to suggest you to get the following two tests done.

1. 24 to 48 hrs ambulatory Holter monitoring. It's will record your heart activity and will help us detect any transient Arrythmia that might be happening with you.

2. Thyroid profile checked. As thyroid dysfunction also can cause abnormal heart activity as well as symptoms of fatigue, Dizziness.

Kindly consult with your cardiologist and get these two tests done.

I hope this information will be helpful and will guide you properly.

Kind Regards

I have seen cardiologist and done holder and thyroid all normal but I was diagnosed with POTS syndrome. So I generally have a high jump when standing . I guess I'm wondering if it's normal for it to drop back down so quickly ( within 30 seconds to a minuet ) back to 70s from 110s pulse

Brief Answer:
Hello Again

Detailed Answer:
You didn't mentioned before that you have been already diagnosed with POTS. Anyways Yes its usual in the patients with POTS to have a variable heart rate with the change in posture.

Heart rate tends to increase when the individual comes into standing position from supine or sitting and tends to decrease when person sit down or lie down from standing position.

Yes its normal dont worry for that. Always remember to change your posture in a staged way rather than suddenly changing the posture. Drink plenty of fluids daily and increase a bit of salt in your daily diet.

I hope this information will relieve your worries.

Kind Regards
