Posted on Tue, 15 Dec 2015
Question: I already contacted you about back pain. I did MRI on my lower back and the doctor said there is nothing significant wrong exept he thinks that I have bad SI joint and he recomended pain management specialist to do some kind of injection with help of xrays. I hope that you will know what this is. Some of my friends said that i should not alow that because its bad for my back and some other said that I should go ahead. What is your opinion about that? And also can you tell me if there is nothing serious wrong with my back why is my pain increasing?

Brief Answer:
Local steroid injections help in reducing inflammation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The bad SI joint can cause minor nerve root compression causing the pain. The increase in pain may be related to muscle spasm or a ligament sprain due to constant exercise or strain on the back muscles.
The first line of treatment is pain killers along with muscle relaxants and calcium supplements. Regular exercise under the guidance of a proficient physiotherapist is also helpful.
In case there is no improvement on conservative treatments then traction can also be considered. If that also fails then local steroid injections are given to reduce the pain and inflammation. It helps in providing relief for few weeks and the muscles improve with the help of physiotherapy by then. There is no harm in taking the injections if you have tried all the medications and are not relieved. The injections are not harmful.
I hope this answers your query.

Brief Answer:
The pain can be due to muscle spasms.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Since you cannot tolerate the pain killers and you have already tried physical therapy the steroid injections can help you. The pain that you have can be related to muscle spasms also. Oral muscle relaxants and hot compress can provide relief to some extent.
Hope my answer is helpful.
