What Causes Indentation Above Knee On Thigh?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: I am 50 years old, average weight. I work on my feet 4-5 days a week, and recently moved into an apartment with stairs inside, which I frequent. After moving in, I noticed an indentation the size of an egg in circumphrence, and maybe 1/8 inch deep about 2 inches above my knee on my thigh. There is a developing fatty bulge next to it, on my inner thigh. There is no pain. It seems like somehow there was a dent made and it shoved fat to the side of my leg. Is this possible? I am a little muscular, and don't think there is much fat at the front of my thigh. Could I have strained my thigh, weekened it with all my walking, and stair climbing? How do I get rid of it? Wear a bandage around my thigh, to kind of shove the fat back into place? Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer: it may be a lipoma or hematoma Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for writing to HCM. Walking and climbing stairs or the strain caused by these activities dont cause any indentation. They may cause swelling if your leg got twisted or sprained. But that is a painful thing. In my opinion the fatty, painless swelling can be a lipoma which you have noticed now, and maybe it was there unnoticed for a while. The indentation near it can be due to pulling of the skin towards that swelling. Other possibility is that swelling may be a hematoma, following a trivial injury which you didn't noticed. You need to show it to a surgeon for a physical examination and a needle biopsy if he feels so. If it comes out be a lipoma, its upto you to decide to get it excised or not for cosmetic reason, as they are harmless swellings. If its a hematoma, then they usually resolve in a few weeks.
