Question: I am male 60 years, diabetic for 20 years. 2 months back went through victroctamy surgery for left eye for diabetic retinopathy and retina detachment, with silicon oil injected. Post operation doing fine. My HbA1c was 7.3 % before surgery and strict diet, now it is 6.7%. I take Tresiba insulin 24 units once night at 10 pm daily, along with Janumet 50/1000 twice day and Ceruvin 75 and Arbital 40 once a day. My question is : Recently my Endo prescribed Rosuvastatin 10, once day post dinner. After 3 days of taking, i faced laziness, muscle and body pain, and constipation. I stopped for last 3 days, i am not feeling these problem. Do i continue this tablet or continue, if i discontinue, do i face any health problem. I have heard, statin family medicine are not good for health, especially where LDL is less XXXXXXX 100. My LDL is 90.4, TG is 80.0, HDL is 35.0 , TC is 141.00. Cholestrol levels are the same for lasr 20 years. I never had any heart ailments. Please advice. Regards

Brief Answer:
Statins are not mandatory for you.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
Hi, I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern.
Statins have pleomorphic action, that is they have various actions other then keeping your cholesterol low. They have in plaque (clot) stabilization, and have immunomodulatory effects as well. So, overall they reduce the chances of a person to get heart attack.
In fact, recent studies indicate there role in progression of diabetic retinopathy.
This might be the reason your doctor have prescribed it to you even with normal Lipid Profile.
However, the side effects you felt are seen with the Statins, but most of them are transient.
There is no absolute indication in your case to take Statins, however, as for the pleomorphic roles it gives, you may take it at a dose of Rosuvastatin 5 mg a day and if you feel comfortable with that you may continue it at this dose.
This is my personal opinion based on details available here. If you still have any other query, you may please ask me.
Stay Healthy.

Thank you for your reply. I did not understand the meaning, of recent study......, does this means it controls increase of diabetic retinopathy? In other words, if i had taken it in the past, it would have saved my surgery of diabetic retinopathy and retina detachment ? Also i heard this tablet increase sugar level, thus affecting my plan of sugar control, is it so? Please clarify

Brief Answer:
It helps in preventing retinopathy.

Detailed Answer:
I mean to say that Statins have been linked to stopping the progression and preventing the Retinopathy. It's not that if you take Statins you won't ever develop retinopathy but yes the progression can be slowed down. Retinopathy is best prevented by perfect blood sugar controls.
Yes Rosuvastatin has been claimed to be diabetogenic. But it's use may be a boon in already diabetic patients as because of it's pleomorphic effects as discussed.
So it's diabetogenic potential needs consideration while use in people who are at risk of developing diabetes.
I hope it helps you.
If you have any further query, please ask me.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX
Thank you for clarification of my doubts. So you mean, since I am already diabetic, considering the medicine and insulin that I am taking you are of the opinion, that statin will not increase my Blood sugar level and my control plan will be successful and I should not have fear of increasing BS level. please clarify

Brief Answer:
You can take.

Detailed Answer:
See you need to understand that every drug has it's own adverse effect and we need to quantify that what is more important. The adverse effects or the advantages.
So it is considered that in a diabetic person , the advantages are more compared to the adverse effects particularly the diabetogenic effect as that is atleast being covered with appropriate medicines and insulin.
So no one can say that Statins won't cause any fluctuations in the Blood sugars of a Diabetic person but the advantages are so many that it should be considered.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
