Question: Hi,
I had a bowel obstruction surgery 4 weeks ago. Unfortunately I had an infection in my incisions and doctor had to open the wound. I have a nurse coming every day to clean the wound and 4 weeks post surgery it measures 8 cm x 3 cm. Surgent think it will take another 4 weeks to close completely. I'm out of pain meds except for Tylenol that I take before the dressing change. The wound is on the lower part of my stomach close to the top of my vagina...

My question is; When Can I have intercourse with my husband ?
...do I have to wait until the wound is closed completely?. Nurses are saying we have to wait until the wound is closed, my , my surgeon say that it is ok if it doesn't hurt (but he is a man :-)...Im very interested in a 2 opinion...

Best regards

Brief Answer:
Individual scenarios vary widely.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. You need to understand the scenario and take an individualized decision. You have undergone a surgery and the wound takes time to heal completely. There is a good range of variation in this regard. While some people come back to a normal livelihood quite early, others keep getting problems and can be vulnerable to wound dehiscence. You yourself have to ascertain how confident you feel about the healing of your wound. Your surgeon is right, if it does not hurt, you can go for it. But chances are that it would. Sex can be an intensive process. While for some people it is a tender and passionate event, it can be extremenly rough for others. You have to judge your own scenario about whether you feel confident about going for it, as it can be harsh on your wound. If not, it might be a good idea to wait for a while till you grow confident enough to go for it.

Feel free to write back.
