What Causes Inflammation In Right Leg?

default
Posted on Sat, 10 Oct 2015
Question: Hello, my father has been having inflammation in his right leg since last 2 days and not able to walk. Applying ice pack did not help reduce swelling. This is 3rd or 4th time such occurrence in last 3 months where earlier it used to be his toe getting swelling.

He had consulted a physician yesterday who asked to get his uric acid checked which has come higher as per attached urine report. He is on medication of blood pressure, cholesterol and a diuretics because of his mitral valve condition since last 1.5 years.

Can you please advise for immediate relief and avoiding repeat of the same ? Appreciate your help.

Brief Answer:
Get prescription for NSAIDs

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Greetings from Dr Divakara P
Thanks for posting your query.

Well his inflammation of foot is due to his elevated Uric acid . This condition is called Gout.

For immediate relief he can take medication like NSAID's ( unless he is allergic to it ). If the pain is very severe then he can take an injection of NSAIDs.

For definitive treatment of the gout and to bring down uric acid he needs to be started on either Febutaz or Zyloric which he may have to take for 6-12 months.

Also certain diuretics can cause elevation of uric acid . Kindly let me know what diuretic he is taking.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarification feel free to ask.

Regards.

Thank you doctor for your quick response.
My father is taking Diuretic tab Lisalecton 50 half tablet a day in morning with concoor 2.5Am for BP and Novastat 10mg for cholesterol.

For gout he was prescribed zyloric 100mg thrice a day yesterday. Should he continue with the same dosage? Will it be required to continue for 6 months to control uric acid as mentioned by you?

Thanks for your help!

Brief Answer:
Continue same dose of Zyloric for 3 months.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Lasilactone diuretic contains a drug called Furesemide . The side of this Furesemide is elevation in Uric acid level.

I recommend you to stop that medicine and ask your doctor for a replacement like Aldactone .

He can take Zyloric for 3 months and then repeat Uric acid test , based on his levels we shall decide whether to continue Zyloric further at same dose or reduce the dose or to stop.

Hope this information was useful to you.

Thank you Dr. Divakara for your advise.

My father had met today Physician for follow-up and he has now prescribed Foxstat 80 to be taken daily once for reducing uric acid in place of Zyloric. He has also asked to take pain killer combination medicine Sedase-D 3 times daily and PAN-D in case of acidity.

For diuretic to be changed, he has prescribed CTD 12.5 in place of Lasilactone.
Hope that is ok.

My father has been feeling weakness since starting these medication although the pain and swelling in the leg has reduced now. So kindly advise if any other care should be taken.

Thanks for your follow up and advise!

Brief Answer:
Prefer Aldactone over CTD

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Sorry to say but chlorthalidone ( CTD ) also can cause Hyperurecemia. I would recommend Aldactone instead of that.

Don't worry about the weakness , it shall go off. Let him eat well.
