What Causes Intermittent Diarrhea With Severe Stomach Cramps?

default
Posted on Sat, 8 Oct 2016
Question: I have had some digestive issues since childhood, with intermittent diarrhea. I have had severe stomach cramps and diarrhea after eating in the mornings mostly accompanied by sudden nausea, but not vomitting, off and on for a year. Twice I've fainted during these episodes in the last couple months. I had my gall bladder removed a year ago after multiple trips to ER with uncontrolled vomiting in the middle of the night. I thought that I would figure out what I could and couldn't eat after a while, but digestive issues continue and seem to be even worse, although the vomiting resolved after gall bladder surgery.

Brief Answer:
as explained in details.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Female/65 - digestive issues since childhood - intermittent diarrhea - now over a year have severe stomach cramps and diarrhea after eating in the mornings, with sudden nausea - fainted twice during these episodes - GB removed a year ago and settled with vomiting - tried to figure out what to eat and what not to - but the digestive issues continue and seem to be worse - medications not tried - not seen any Doctor - dietary restrictions - own sourdough bread without commercial yeast this week and no intense episode for a couple of days - too less a period to expect results to be permanent...

My thoughts aster reading your detailed history:
Since the problems are since childhood and increased severity since one year, I was wondering about the reasons for not having met a Doctor or taken an opinion of a Specialists like a Gastroenterologist.
Cramps and diarrhea after eating in the morning indicate that there must be a reason for which the following needs to be done:
Clinical evaluation by a Gastroenterologist and examination.
Investigations of blood, urine and stool.
Colonoscopy, upper GI Endoscopy.
CT scan of the abdomen with Enterography for the intestines.

If any of these tests are showing anything positive, you get a diagnosis and a proper plan of treatment to get a cure.
If all the investigations are normal, then a probability of IBS, that is irritable bowel syndrome needs to be kept in mind and treated accordingly.

I hope, this answer helps you to get an early and most probable diagnosis and get a proper management; please feel free to ask for further relevant if you feel that thee is a gap of communication.

It's not that I haven't seen a doctor at all, after all, a surgeon removed my gallbladder. The surgeon and my own GP's advice was to learn what I could eat and not eat after the surgery and that I would gradually adjust. I live in AK and had the surgery in XXXXXXX I guess I'll have to travel again to get proper care.

Brief Answer:
Get a proper diagnosis is imperative.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
The baseline investigations can be done at a place where the facilities are available and then taken the consultation of a Specialist.
These help to get a differential diagnosis and a plan for further management.
