default
Posted on Mon, 3 Oct 2016
Question: I'm having intermitent sharp stabbing pain in my lower right abdomen/pelvic area. It hurts intensly for a few second and then goes away. it's infrequent but feels kind of sore or inflamed on general, not stabbing all of the time. just very mild discomfort aside from the pain episodes. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
may be due to peripheral neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that the pain may be related to neuralgia (nerve related pain) which may be due to peripheral neuropathy (abnormal function of the nerve in the area)

This may be temporary or permanent.

There are different possible causes such as: (1) diabetes
(2)trauma
(3)low vitamin b12 or folate
(4)liver or kidney disease
(5)side effect of medication
(6)exposure of toxins
(7)infections such as shingles
(8)nerve conditions such as stroke or ms
(9)idiopathic- cause not found
(10) some hormonal causes eg thyroid disease or autoimmune diseases

To determine the cause, if it continues or it is severe, then you would to be assessed.
This would involve physical examination and blood tests (screening for diabetes, vitamin b12 and folate levels, liver and kidney assessment, complete blood count)

There are medications used for nerve related pain such amitriptyline, tegretol, lyrica, gabapentin

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Hi thank you. I did have a partial colectomy in March . This was on the opposite side. My symptoms have coincided with this now that I think of it. I'll bet your first guess is right.

Brief Answer:
trauma could definitely be the cause in this case

Detailed Answer:
HI

Trauma is definitely a possible cause with a history of surgery.

You may want to consider speaking to your doctor or surgeon
