What Causes Intermittent Painful Urination In A Child?
Question: Hi, my 2 year old has painful urination. This has been the case (on and off) since he was only a month or two old ... first I was told it's dehydration (he has no other symptoms of dehydration and drinks water regularly). He's had his urine tested for infections but it comes back clear. Then I found the orange stains in his wet nappy from uric crystals ... before that was looked into properly I found actual blood on the end of his penis and in his nappy (this has happened 3 times in total now). The doctor then suggested it's from phimosis ... but I feel that seems it has been going on for so long and since he was so little, it maybe something else? When it's bad he screams every time he urinates and it may go on like that for weeks, and then it may settle for a few weeks then it starts again. He's not sick otherwise ... just holds his nappy and cries that it hurts until he's finished urinating then he's happy again.
If you have any insight or advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Brief Answer:
most likely phimosis
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Based on your description it looks like phimosis.
It is common in infants as the opening may be closed tightly by the foreskin.
By one or two years it should have subsided.
But if still he complaints what you described then you need to consult your pediatric surgeon.
Many kids benefit after circumcision to releive phimosis.
Infections have been ruled out as you mentioned.
I don't think there is any other condition which will present like this.
Wishing your child speedy recovery.
