Question: I have throbbing pain on the left side of my abdomen that has been off and on for a couple of months. Yesterday it began to flare up and the pain has worsened and been more painful. Any thought as to what it could be?

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/48 - throbbing pain left side of abdomen - off and on for a couple of months - flared up yesterday - hernia operation on the other side next week - GB removed and Umbilical hernia operated in last 16 months. ....

In view of the history lasting for the last few months, the pain at one site in abdomen indicate the following probable reasons:
Colitis.
Diverticulitis
Left ureteric stone and/or stricture

This can be best diagnosed with the following:
Clinical evaluation, examination, investigations - preferably by a General Surgeon.
Tests of blood, urine and stool.
CT scan is the best investigation to get an appropriate diagnosis and to get a proper plan of management as the proper diagnosis alone can lead to proper treatment.
This should be one before you go for surgery.
I hope this answer helps you. Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
