Posted on Thu, 16 Apr 2015
Question: hi i have been having a intermittent tingling sensation on the right side of my back for the past few weeks but yesterday and this morning it has become constant and feels slightly numb. when i move there is also some muscle soreness almost like a pulling sensation. I had a gastric sleeve procedure in April last year and have lost 90kg i have been going to the gym every day for the past 3-4 months so i am suspicious that i may have a damaged nerve from all the gym work. but my worry is if i ignore it and keep going to the gym am i going to cause any permanent damage?

Brief Answer:
Explained below

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have studied your case.
Due to compression of lumbar spinal nerve root there can be numbness and sore in your back.

I will advise you to do MRI spine.
If MRI spine shows nerve compression then you need to discontinue your gym till full treatment.
If there is nerve compression and you continued your gym then this can lead to long term nerve damage.
For these symptoms analgesic and neurotropic like gabapentin medication can be started consulting your doctor.
Till time, avoid lifting weights, Sit with support to back. You can consult physiotherapist for help.
Physiotherapy like ultrasound and interferential therapy will give quick relief.
I will advise to check your vit B12 and vit D3 level.
You may need complete blood investigation and electrolyte testing as you have done gastric operation.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care.
