Question : My dentist says one tooth has internal reabsorption..what causes this..can they tell from normal dental X-rays..will the tooth need to be extracted..will it affect other teeth as well

Read your query and understand your concern. As your dentist has said you have internal resorption in one tooth, see what happened is internal resorption occurs as a result of trauma or caries related inflammation of pulp .

2-As you are asking about xray, yes, internal resorption can be seen in normal intra oral periapical radiograph or CBCT (cone beam computed tomography ) that is 3 dimensional view also gives information about size , location and shape of lesion formed at apex of root.

3 - Tooth extraction is not necessary unless tooth has grade 3 mobility or more amount of bone loss (vertical and horizontal bone loss) . Treatment for internal resorption can be done is endodontic treatment that is root canal treatment .

4 - No it will not affect the other tooth unless lesion is large and other tooth is affected from trauma or caries .

For this I will suggest you to consult oral surgeon, go for clinical examination and treatment endodontic procedure if possible .
