What Causes Inverted Nipples?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Dec 2014
Question: I was changing clothes was really cold and noticed my nipple was inverted. I rubbed it and it came right back out. Is that serious? I just had a mammogram and ultra sound on that breast last week and it was fine. I just read an inderted nipple can mean cancer. I had the mammo and ultra sound because I thought I had a discharge, but did not. I am a worrier.
Thx

Brief Answer:
No need to worry! Keep watch on it.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

I can understand your concern, though.

It is true that inverted nipple and discharge can be a sign of malignant neoplastic disease.

In your case as you said that you are not having any discharge and your investigations are normal, it may be due to severe cold (revert back to normal with rubbing).

Please keep watch on it and if any new symptoms arise in future, you should consult your treating doctor for the same.

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.

Good luck.

Brief Answer:
Yes, with extreme cold it happens sometimes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Sorry for the delay in my response.

Because of some reasons I am not available online.

Sorry for all the inconvenience.

Yes, with extreme cold it is quite possible that nipple becomes inverted due to contraction.

In cancer, usually it will not get back in normal position after rubbing, it may persist.

In your case as it comes back to normal and your reports are normal, then probabilities of cancer are very low.

Hope it is of some use to you.

Good luck.

So an inverted nipple is different from a retracted one, correct? Retracted stays in even with stimulation.Inverted happens when you are cold or from bra compression or something like that? Is that correct? I was not EXTREMELY cold, just cold. I do not want to keep worrying about this.
Thank you. If u can confirm my conclusions I would appreciate it.
