What Causes Involuntary Muscle Spasms?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Feb 2015
Question: Hey. Question i have, i keep having these involuntary muscle spams, i suppose?
It'll occur randomly, i'm doing something and then i get this spasmp, for like 1 second. I could be standing up then i'll fall down if it's longer than 1 second. Recently, it's been growing more of an occurance than just one or two times.
I'm not exactly sure what it is, I've been to the doctor before and he didn't know what it was, so i'm kinda stumped to whether it's a nerve problem or something normal, doubtful, but i don't know.
Sitting down or doing something, then i get a shock and just tremble, if i'm holding something, i drop it .
What could this be

Brief Answer:
Go for few investigations.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

It seems that you have muscle twitches or fasciculations. These are small, local, involuntary muscle contraction and relaxation visible under the skin arising from the spontaneous discharge of a bundle of skeletal muscle fibers.
You might consult your doctor who can order
1. a few blood tests including thyroid function tests,
2. Serum electrolytes including Serum calcium and potassium levels.
3. Serum B12 levels

In case the above tests are normal further testing can be done including - nerve conduction studies, Electromyography, etc. These tests might help to diagnose any underlying neurological issues.

The treatment of most of the conditions is very easy and the condition will resolve on its own. In some cases, prescription medications might be needed to stop severe symptoms

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.

Take care
