Question: Hi

I have involuntary tongue movements 24/7. My tongue presses on the back of my lower teeth. I collect saliva so quickly I have to swallow every 5-10 mins. I am under a Dr who has done blood tests and these have come back negatative. All this started when I was under a HUGE amount of stress. This stress has now been removed but I am left like this.

Brief Answer:
MRI - Psychiatrist- Neurologist- Treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
I can understand the plight you must be going through.

Yes the commonest reason for such involuntary movement with collection of saliva which needs to be swallowed is usually a psychological trauma. This becomes as if it is compulsive obsessive disorder and the present medicines of Clonazepam and Diazepam may not be sufficient at all.

I would advise in such patients the following. You may please discuss with your Doctor for further actions:::
First of all fo go for MRI of the brain to rule out any SOL ( Space occupying lesion) as this is a cause we find in some patients.
Secondly, to take an opinion of a Psychiatrist and a Neurologist and to continue with their treatment.
Thirdly, You can try additional alternative treatment such as Acupressure or acupuncture. This really helps in some of patients as the doasage of the medicines is reduced over time and may not need the medicines at a ll after a certain time period.

I hope this answer helps you and you may rate this one.
Please feel free to ask for more if you need to.
I am sure that the treatment outlined for you will cure your problems and you will be out of need for any medicines.
Wishing a healthy and complete recovery.

Hi

What is a SOL (Space occupying lesion ) ? It sounds frightening. Would I need an operation? How serious is it ? What would happen if I didn't have an MRI Scan and I had this?

Thank you for all your information.

If Clonazepam and Diazepam are not sufficient - then what meds would?

Brief Answer:
Follow the protocol please

Detailed Answer:
Oh, I am sorry if I have startled you.

Just wanted to tell you the best possible things in a chronological order.
Nothing serious about Sol, just a medical terminology. No, operation is not needed.
Please take this as I said '''TO RULE OUT'' meaning to see that it is not there. Ruling-out is routine a part of diagnosis. So please do not take this seriously at all.
Just a protocol. So MRI is taken as a precaution and this is personal opinion that the patient should follow somethings without a doubt and with belief so that you get an early and complete relief.

Our aim is to get alright, get cured of the tongue movements.

The Psychiatrist can decide which further medicines will be best suited after counselling and consultation and examination. These are prescription based medicines and you need a valid prescription.

As I said, please try for an alternative therapy too.

You will be fine, please just follow the protocol without much doubts and ado.

Wishing you early and complete recovery.
