What Causes Iron Deficiency Anemia?

default
Posted on Sat, 11 Apr 2015
Question: The relationship between seizures and anemia. I saw my doctor yesterday and they ran blood test. He first thought I had a blood flow problem but after the test were done he called me back in two hours and he said I had a very low iron level and he said to pick up some iron pills. He is suspicious of intestinal bleeding and may recommend a colon screening, etc. Your opinion please. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX Welcome to Health care magic. Thank you for posting your query.

Detailed Answer:
I can understand your concern.

There is no relationship between seizures and anaemia.

I think you must have gone through blood tests like haemoglobin, RBC count , Ferritin levels etcetra. Low serum ferritin level can be seen in iron deficiency anemia.

Your doctor has rightly prescribed the iron pills.

But we are more interested in finding the cause of this iron deficiency anemia .At your age such anaemia commonly occurs due to a duodenal ulcer , inflammatory bowel disease like Crohn's disease(affecting both large and small intestine) and ulcerative colitis(affecting colon or the large intestine), or a tuberculous ulcer . All these can lead to intestinal bleeding.

Go for the colonoscopy procedure for the large intestine. If needed there are others like Upper GI endoscopy, double balloon enteroscopy to look at your small intestine.

Do not worry.
With proper investigation and management this anaemia can be definitely cured.

Hope this helps. Get back to us.
We will be happy to help.

Have a nice day. Regards.
