Posted on Mon, 31 Jul 2017
Question: My Wife has hypothyroidism since a few years now. She takes Eltroxin 125 daily. Her periods are sometimes irregular.
1) will her condition cause any issues when we decide have a baby
2)Are there any precautions we need to take, before we plan for a baby, such as maintaining her t3,t4, TSH levels withing a range
3) She is 31 now. Will her age, combined with her condition, affect her ability to conceive? till what age can she safely conceive ?

Brief Answer:
normal thyroid profile at all stages of pregnancy needs to be maintained.

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, hi and welcome to HCM.
1. thyroid profile, if not balanced, will definitely cause problem in pregnancy
2. precautions : maintain TSH 1.4ng/dl
3. 31 years itself is an age considered at risk for pregnancy. so i would suggest you , if possible, plan your baby right away. otherwise there are cases of women delivering till 45yrs as well. thyroid dysfunction and elderly woman, increases the risk of pregnancy both for the mother and the baby. she can conceive till she is having her menstrual cycles, but safely conceive is difficult to answer . As there is no cut off age for safety. Any woman above 30 is considered elderly.

Thanks for your informative answer.

How many months in advance, before we plan, should we start monitoring her thyroid level? also, how frequently should we conduct the blood tests to monitor TSH levels?

Brief Answer:
once in three months you must check her thyroid profile.

Detailed Answer:
Dear xxxxx, not many months before, you have attached march 17 report which is normal, repeat one now, if that is also normal , you may proceed with your conception plans. if not , consult your doctor to adjust the dose, repeat in 6-8 weeks.
recheck when pregnancy is confirmed, or three monthly. during pregnancy check monthly for first trimester.
regards! all the best!
