What Causes Irregular Spotting And Sore Breasts While Having A Progesterone Implant?

Posted on Tue, 22 Mar 2016
Question: Dear Dr Mia Lundi

I have a couple concerns about my menstrual cycle...

I currently have the birthcotrole implant in my arm for 2years now, the first year and a half it really worked well. I didn't get my period, no moods, no swollen breasts, no pains at all.
And now my breasts are constantly sore and swollen and I'm on my period 85% of the month .
I'm 25years old and healthy, gyming and eating mostly right and regular. I weigh 52kg.

Must say do have a lot of stress, have my own business...

When me and my boyfriend have sex it's not sore but the next day I'll just start my period even if it stopped a couple of days ago...

This is a real consurn to me and I will appreciate some advice on what the couse may be and what I should do.

Thank you so much

Brief Answer:
Estrogen hormone supllementation

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Irregular spotting and bleeding along with sore breasts are the common side effects of progesterone implants.
It is due to the progesterone hormone they contain.
You can be given estrogen hormone like estradiol valerate to stop this spotting.
You can discuss with your OBGYN and get started on estrogen hormone.
If the problem is not controlled by estrogen, then you should get it removed and switch over to other methods of contraception.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Dear Dr XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Thank you so much for the detailed and understandable answer.

The Estrogen hormone supplements, won't effect my mood, temper, skin or weight?
What negative side effects can it have on me?

If no real harmful negative impact on my life, which Estrogen hormone supplements is the best and affordable to use? Without a prescription.

How careful should me a my boyfriend be?
(With my Estrogen levels being irregular now and when I get my Estrogen levels up.) Not to get pregnant.

Brief Answer:
No major side effects

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,Low doses of estrogen have very rare side effect of weight gain. There are no side effects like mood swings, temper and it is known to improve the skin texture and glow.
Estradiol valerate is best. No estrogen preparation is available without a prescription.
Since the implant is still there, the estrogen will not affect its contraceptive efficacy, so there is no precaution to be taken by both of you in that aspect.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
