What Causes Irritable Cranky Behaviour, Excessive Tantrums And Vomiting In A Toddler?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Mar 2016
Question: My 2.5 year old son has lately (lat 10 days) become quite cranky and irritable. He throws a tantrum and starts crying very hard for the most silly of reasons eg why did you change my dirty T, why did you close the door etc. This is usually followed by throwing up whatever he has consumed in the last hr or two hrs. This is now a once or twice a day phenomenon. Alternatively he drinks large quantities of water, plays and then throws up.

He is recovering from a cold followed by a short bout of loose motions.

How do I stop this throwing up as he is starting to loose weight?

Brief Answer:
Looks like he is having temper tantrums

Detailed Answer:
Hi....throwing up after doing all these crying is very much suggestive of temper tantrums.

Will explain you what tantrums are and how to curtail this behaviour.

Tantrums may happen when kids are tired, hungry, or uncomfortable; or because they can't get something (for example, an object or a parent) to do what they want. Learning to deal with frustration is a skill that children gain over time.

Tantrums are common during the second year of life, a time when language skills are starting to develop. Because toddlers can't yet say what they want, feel, or need, a frustrating experience may cause a tantrum. As language skills improve, tantrums tend to decrease.

This is what you can do to avoid or prevent tantrums -
1. Give plenty of positive attention
2. Try to give toddlers some control over little things
3. Keep off-limits objects out of sight and out of reach
4. Distract your child
5. Help kids learn new skills and succeed
6. Consider the request carefully when your child wants something
7. Know your child's limits

Thank you Dr.

The thing is my child can talk and expresses himself pretty well. Yet he has started getting into these crying fits. Will follow your advice and see if I manage to head them off.

What about the frequent episodes of throwing up after drinking water? Anything to worry there?

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry about that too - its all the part of same tantrums

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Nothing to worry about that too - its all the part of same tantrums.

Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry about this vomiting.
