What Causes Irritation And Redness At The Site Of Catheter Insertion In Groin Area?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Sep 2015
Question: I have redness and irritation at catheter entry site in groin (venous puncture) 60 days ago. I also have muscle tightness that varies from inside leg, at groin, in hamstring and hip. What could be the cause? No swelling or other major symptoms, just very minor localized redness and persistant muscle tightness. Also, it seems like theres a 1 inch shadow around the site that can only be seen in very low light

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

You are saying to have:
- have had venous puncture 60 days ago
- while now still having redness and irritation at the catheter entry site
- associated with muscle tightness from inside leg, at groin, in hamstring and hip.

Now, I need to know:
- why you had the venous puncture done?
- did you suffer of any complication at the time where the catheter was inserted in?

Depending on the substance injected during venous puncture, it might be the cause to such irritation. Furthermore, if any micro-surgical intervention has been been carried out locally, this is also explaining the local irritation.

As this has been going even 60 days after the venous puncture, then, inflammation/infection of the local vein should be considered and ruled out by Echo Doppler.

You can take anti-inflammatory medications orally and apply anti-inflammatory cream locally until infected vein (thrombophlebitis) is confirmed. If yes, then, antibiotics should be immediately started.

Hope it was of help!
