Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: Random areas on my body itches and itchy areas are swelled up and red.
Mostly on hands and legs.
The Palm and Feet itchiness is accompanied by mild pain.
Increases at nights mostly.

It started all with a blood test done as part of my medical examination.
Around the area the syringe was inserted was red.
Also i was diagnosed with deficiency of Vitamin D(6.4) and B12(on borderline).
Since then the itching is happening.

It almost a month now the symptom has been occurring.
The area i live in has avg temperature of 26 degree C through out the day. Nights are around 19 degree C.

If i take Vitamin Supplements i feel the itching increases.

Brief Answer:
Discontinue multivitamin tablets; continue with antiallergics

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have gone through your query and I have understood your concern.

The condition which you have is known as Urticaria Or Hives.
Urticaria/ Hives usually presents as skin welts/swellings, which can be distributed all over the body. Itching is commonly associated and varies from mild to extreme.

Urticaria OR hives can happen due to various causes which may be discovered on carefully questioning the patient:

--Infections (e.g common cold, flu, gastointestinal infection etc)
--Drugs (Pain killers, antibiotics, multivitamins etc)
--Certain foods and food additives/preservatives
--Physical Urticaria: Cold temperature, Heat, Pressure(Prolonged Standing, Sitting), Dermographism etc.
--Cholinergic Urticaria: in response to strong emotions, exercise, spicy food etc
--Autoimmune disorders like lupus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) etc.

However, 50% of cases have no underlying discoverable cause for their urticaria and are known as idiopathic urticaria.

In your case it could very well be drug induced Or drug aggravated i.e Vitamin supplements, as you have also noticed that the itch severity is related to vitamin intake. Therefore I suggest you to discontinue multivitamins.

Instead of taking vitamin supplement you may add dietary sources rich in these vitamins like milk and other dairy products, fish etc which are good sources of vitamin D as well as Vitamin B 12.

For urticaria you may take symptomatic treatment for a few more days i.e tablet cetrizine and tablet allegra for another 2 weeks.
Topically you may use a soothing lotion e.g calamine/ calasoft lotion.

Other drugs like pain killers and antibiotics too can also cause this type of reaction.
