What Causes Itching At Different Places In Body?

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Apr 2015
Question: Hello? I have been itching randomly, usually when I am a home, for the past 5 months. Ive been treated for with two subsequent perscriptions of prednisone 5mg, but the don't seem to much except provide mild to somewhat relief. I would love to know any ideas that come back out of this. I live in an old apartment in Minnesota, and once it got cold out I really noticed pain coming from itching. Now the meds keep at bay somewhat , but I would love to figure out whats going on? Is there something more? Do I need to seek out a dermatologist? This problem is getting old, and I sick of being itchy? Can someone help me?

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome and thank you for posting your query in healthcare magic.com.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

Itching of the body or pruritus has many causes, some environmental, some dermatological and even some due to internal diseases. Internal diseases can be of liver, kidney, thyroid, diabetes mellitus, anemia like iron deficiency anemia. All has to ruled out before we can call it a dermatological problem or some drug reaction. I would suggest you to do the following as I generally suggest my patients with similar symptoms-

Get a blood test done for complete hemogram, liver function test, T3 T4 TSH, blood sugar, serum iron ferritin and TIBC, urea and creatinine.
Get a skin allergy test done.
Get your blood eosinophil and IgE done.
Tab fexofenadine 160mg twice daily for 20 days.
Local application of lactocalamine lotion twice/ thrice daily.

You can discuss the above with your treating doctor and get the medicines prescribed and tests done. Get your reports checked and if all are more or less normal, a dermatologist should be consulted because many diseases like psoriasis, scabies, lice infestation etc can present with itching. Also if your living area is very cold or dry, change to a better place or improve house conditions. If you can please upload the images of the itching area and I will take a look at the lesions.

Hope this was helpful.
