What Causes Itching Circular Patches Of Bumps On Hands?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Sep 2014
Question: Hi,

I have had something on the back of my hand for some time now. Was wanting an opinion on what it might be and how to treat it. It starts out as a small cluster of bumps that are skin colored. Within 24 hours it becomes a little red. After a few days, it might stay the same or it might become dry and flaky. It is itchy. The skin itself, where it is located, loses it's color. When you have a XXXXXXX it looks really silly. And it spreads. It starts as a small, almost circular patch and keeps going until the back on the entire hand is like that. I used cedarwood undiluted oil on it and that makes it go away temporarily. But after the first time, it will still itch. It has been on the backs of both hands, but is dominant on my left hand. It comes in cycles and sticks around for months. I have had it several times since I was in 5th grade. In 5th grade, we tried white vinegar and I can't say it helped in the tortuous two weeks we used it. It eventually went away on it's own. In 7th grade, I was told it was ring worm and that it looked like I had been burned, but nothing helped it. It eventually went away on it's own. I got it again as a teenager and as an adult. Cederwood oil was the first thing to do something to help it go away. On a side note, is there any possibility this is connected to cats? I doubt it, but it was a nagging side thought.

Brief Answer:
Sounds like ring worm.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have gone through your entire history , I think it would be ring worm as it causes itching plus circular patches are very synonymous with fungal infection . Next possibilty can be contact dermatitis which can also give rise to this kind of lesions.

The best approach would be to get a skin scraping done from the lesion and then get it tested , that will be the confirmatory test for it . Plus cedar wood oil has got excellent antifungal properties so that might be the reason for its working in your case . But a diagnosis needs to be there for prescribing medicines for the same.

Take care.
