Question: I have an old scar from when I got bit from my dog and it is so itchy. Is there something I can use to get rid of the itch?

I have read through your query in detail.
Occasionally, old scars can develop itching and at the same time get painful and swollen. If you have associated pain and swelling then it is important to consult a doctor immediately. If there is only itching then you can try some first aid remedies as detailed below.

Many times the scar tissue gets tightened up and this causes the itching sensation. For this you can apply any hypo allergic lotion or oil to loosen up the tissues below and stretch the scar which will minimize the itching. This usually treats mild scar itching.

If the itching does not improve then you might have to consider applying over the counter anti itch lotions or ointments containing steroids such as hydrocortisone.

A more severe itching not relieved by above measures may require you to consult a doctor for prescription of anesthetics like topical 5 percent lidocaine ointment for application.
