Question : My son who is 11 recently came to me with these little pimples with pus on the side of his head. He complained that they itch

Please advice if this is some type of fungus or a skin condition that i should take him to the dermatologist.

I have gone through your query and have checked the attached image. The probabilities are:
* Chicken pox. If that is the case it is likely to involve the entire body.
* Bacterial/fungal infection. Application of antibiotic+antifungal (like gentamicin+miconazole) should help. Also give him some antiallergic like cetirizine once daily.

A direct examination by a pediatrician or a dermatologist should help.
