What Causes Joint Pain In Feet And Rash On Chest Area?

Posted on Tue, 28 Oct 2014
Question: I am terrified that my 21 year old son, who is away at college (Tufts in Boston) has Lupus or something worse. About 5 weeks ago he developed moderate joint pain in feet, wrist, fingers and I believe knees. Pain is intermittent and controlled well by aspirin. He also has had some rashes. At first a rash that covered his chest. That went away and now the rash looks more like hives on forearm and chest. Otherwise feels fine, Goes to class, and is preparing for a trip to Switzerland in 2 weeks. His spirits are good too. Went to infectious disease doctor, and was tested for Lyme twice-negative. Also tested for several other infection related things and CBC etc. Everything normal except elevated inflammation markers. he is visiting a rheumatologist next week. My problem is I cannot sleep/eat for worrying about this. Does it sound like Lupus or possibly rheumatoid arthritis? Can that cause a rash? Panicked mom.

Brief Answer:
I think its less likely.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your entire problem I would like to tell you that rash and joint pains can arise in a lot of conditions and it will be very difficult to give you a diagnosis based on this . But it does not seems like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis .

It looks like Adult onset stills disease by the history as rashes come and go but needs investigation.

First consult a rheumatologist as examination is very important in determining whats going on . Second get a Rheumatoid factor , ANA , ENA Profile , S ferritin levels .

These test will be vital in determining the disease .

Take care.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thanks for reverting back.

See every patient is not copy book presentation so need not worry after reading all the details on internet . All the diseases can be managed effectively but important is to recognise the disease and start treatment accordingly at the right time .

First let us find out what actually is the problem . Most of the time simple viral infections can give rise to such picture which settles on its own and nothing is to be done so please relax and you cannot change the disease by worrying but together we can find out whats the actual thing going on.

You can ask anything anytime , we are always there to help you out .
