Question: My baby is 6 and a half month old. He got BSG vaccine when he was 1 month old. Around 4th month the spot became red. No puss. Then it got bigger over time. Last night it was drastically bigger -swollen and peeled on top. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
This is BCGiois - no intervention is required at present

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I have gone through the history you have provided and also the images.

This BCGiosis and right now no intervention is required.

This is a rare but well known reaction for BCG vaccination in some kids. There will an abscess formation underneath and pus collection.

This is not tuberculosis and should be treated as tuberculosis infection.

This will settle by itself. Sometimes if it becomes a large abscess, then it might require an incision and drainage. The pus if sent for staining and culture - might show TB microbes and even might grow TB microbes in culture. But this the is the bovine vaccine strain of the organism and doesn't warrant treatment.

But if there is high grade fever or other serious bacterial infections suggestive of immunodeficiency, then we need to treat it.

But as far as your son is concerned, he doesn't require any treatment for it at present and you can wait it out for another 2 weeks. If he develops a larger abscess, then you need to see a surgeon for incision and drainage.

I wish your son a speedy recovery. Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.

Brief Answer:
Suggestion on managing pus

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
1.No need to treat the pus if it coming out automatically. Mostly it will heal by itself. If it is not healing you can apply Betadine ointment or see your physician.

2. You can clean with gentle soap and clean water. After leaning leave it open and do not cover it with cotton or gauge.

3. You can bathe the baby over the spot with gentle soap and water. NO problem.
