Question : wife has a large welt on right leg swollen red

It could be Cellulitis or Lymphangitis

Please answer these questions so I can know the problem in detail.
1. Since when is the red swelling in the leg?
2. Did she suffer any trauma to the leg in the recent past?
3. Does she have any other diseases that she is on treatment for?
4. Is she having fever with warmth around the swelling?
5. Has she had any surgeries in the past?
6. Is she able to walk or is she mostly on the bed.

It could be one of these problems. Cellulitis which is an infection of the tissues below the skin. Lymphangitis which is an inflammation of the vessels carrying the lymph up the limb or Deep Venous Thrombosis which is the occurence of clots in the deep veins of the lower limb.
If there is fever and pain then she would require a course of antibiotics and anti inflammatory medicines for a week with rest to the limb.
If it is DVT which can be proved only with a Color Doppler test of the limb then she will require Heparin injections.
In either case you should consult your Doctor or GP who can examine her and advice accordingly.
