What Causes Left-sided Abdominal Pain And Brown Vaginal Discharge Post Total Hysterectomy?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: Hi! I'm a 48 year old female post total hysterectomy - surgery in 1991. For the past 10 years I've had recurring phantom "ovarian pain" on my left side each month around the 20th. It has been getting much worse lately and today I was in bed from the pain. I just went to the bathroom and found a large yellow/brown mucus looking piece that came from my vagina. No odor or urine discoloration. The piece was about 1" wide/thick. Looks a little like mucus plug but I have no cervix
I've been to several docs over the past 10 years and no one can figure out where the pain is coming from. I've had a bladder sling and mesh put in for adhesions about 15 years ago. Help! Should I be concerned? And who should I see to help - what specialist?

Brief Answer:
Mucus plug discharge is not worrisome.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The monthly pain that you have is likely to be due to an intestinal cause as your ovaries have been removed already. The brownish mucus plug that has come out is not worrisome. The brown color indicates an old bleeding that can be due to a slight trauma or vaginal dryness also.
To find out the cause of pain it is best to consult a gastroenterologist and get an MRI scan done to detect any abnormal adhesions after so many surgeries.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
