What Causes Left-sided Abdominal Pain Radiating To The Back While Having Diverticulitis?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jun 2017
Question: I have a history of diverticulitis which has been well controlled for many years. I had a small rupture about 15 years ago which did not require surgery. Beginning yesterday I have had a sharp pain in lower left abodomen with a lot of pain in my lower back and in kidney area. When I had the incident 15 years ago I had blood in urine with the back pain, a symptom which runs in the family with diverticulitis, but I do not have that symptom now. The back pain is much worse than has ever been before. I keep Flagyl on hand to take if I have an incident and I used to take Cipro as well, but the last time I did I had an allergic reaction. I am allergic to almost all antibiotics and my doctor at the time told me if I needed to take Cipro again I would have to be hospitalized. So... should I just start of the Flagyl and see what happens, or go to an Urgent Care center? My email is YYYY@YYYY . Thanks.

Brief Answer:
A better idea is to go to urgent care and get a prompt evaluation and proper diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.
I am a Gastroenterologist and would be answering your query.

As per your query, answers are--

My suggestion is better to go to the nearest healthcare facility in your area and get an ultrasound abdomen done at first.

Left sided abdominal pain radiating to back can be a colicy pain also due to stone in kidney or gallbladder.

Secondly, as nature of pain is different from the last one, possibilities are there that it's not related to diverticulitis.

Do also get a stool routine micro-analysis test done to see if the infection is bacterial or protozoal.
Metrogyl is anti protozoal and will not help if Diverticulitis is caused by any bacterial source.

As you are allergic to a number of antibiotics, a better suggestion is to go to the hospital, get a scan done to rule out other possibilities.

Medications could be started once the cause is found out.

Hope I answered your query.

Thanks.
