Posted on Wed, 12 Apr 2017
Question: I have been having left side pain on and off. It is increasing in frequency and sharpness. It has actually made me stop walking as each step caused more pain. It doubles me over at times and other times I can't straighten up to stretch out! It is located between ribs and pelvic ( I think)! Thank you in advance for your prompt attention, XXXXXXX XXXX

Brief Answer:
Muscle spasm added on with fibromyalgia and/or Prolapsed disc

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Female/52 - pain - left sided between ribs and pelvis - on and off - increasing in frequency and sharpness - made stop walking as each step caused more pain - doubles you over - can not straighten up to stretch out at times - hot rice pack and Ibuprofen - noted Medical History and Current medications also ...

Such a pain that is incapacitating may be due to muscles spasms as well as some problem in the spine like disc prolapse.
Since you have not mentioned any urinary symptoms, kidney related problem seems not concerned although it may cause similar problems.

I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Clinical evaluation, examination and investigations like MRI of the spine and the retroperitoneal area will get the exact diagnosis.
This is important as then the treatment given will be very specific and result oriented.

I hope this answer helps you to get a proper diagnosis and management.
Till then continue hot rice pack and Ibuprofen.
Also get checked for blood pressure, thyroid functions and other tests to see whether the continued treatment needs any alterations.

Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
