default
Posted on Mon, 5 May 2014
Question: Over the past few months ive experienced increased lethargy and sleep disturbances. I have also lost 16kg despite a good appetite. My neck has been swollen, sore and ive been feverish the past few days and im getting more palpations. Is it possible for me to be experiencing both subacute thyroiditis and graves? Do they have any connection to each other and does my recent delivery have anything to do with this? My recent tests: RBC - 5.3 million/mm3 WBC- 10954/ mm3 Platelets- 22000/mm3 Haemoglobin- 134 g/L Sodium- 145 mEq/L Potassium- 4.4 mEq/L Calcium- 1.3mmol/L Magnesium- 0.89mmol/L Troponin (cTn) 11ng/L Creatinine Kinase (CK) 120 U/L TSH- o.25mlU/L T3- 14pmol/L FT4- 3.4ng/dL TSI- Positive

Brief Answer: You have hyperthyroidism & low calcium levels Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXX, Thanks for consulting us. Regarding your reports, Your blood complete picture seems alright. Sodium, potassium & Magnesium levels are fine. Calcium is low. Thyroid tests indicate a hyper-functioning thyroid gland due to some auto-immune cause. Commonest is the Graves disease. Sub-acute thyroiditis is a rare condition & Thyroid stimulating Antibodies are usually low in this condition. Both Graves disease & Sub-acute thyroiditis cause hyperthyroidism & need treatment. In addition you are also having symptoms of an enlarged thyroid gland & hyperthyroidism. In your medical history you mentioned Gestational diabetes, I am wondering are you pregnant right now or it was your past problem? Anyway, whatever the cause you need further evaluation of your neck & Thyroid gland by an expert physician. Your doctor will do your local examination & may suggest tests like Thyroid ultrasound or scanning & may be some blood testing to find out the cause of these elevated levels. You will then need treatment to lower the levels & to reduce your symptoms. You will also need Calcium supplements to optimize your health. So, plan a Physician visit as soon as possible. Also report to your Gynecologist if you are pregnant. Please write back if you have any question. Best regards.
