What Causes Light Period With Intermittent Sweating And Abdominal Pain?

Posted on Fri, 23 Jan 2015
Question: Hello. I am concerned that I forgot the last tampon of my period appx 6 weeks ago. I was late this month (no chance of pregnancy, abstinent), 5-6 weeks and I am usually regular 4 weeks. No odors noted. This period very light on day 1, usually heavy, and today I have had intermittent sweats, but afebrile and abdominal cramping that is consistent with usual cramping of my period. I am 39 and mother had surgically induced menopause so I don't know family history of natural onset. Unable to palpate on my internal vaginal exam. Should I make a gyne appointment?

Brief Answer:
Yes, please see an OB - GYN.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Yes, if you are not absolutely sure that you removed your tampon, please make a gynecological appointment.
As such, at 39, it is alright to have a scantier/ delayed cycle once in a while as long as pregnancy is ruled out.
But you need to ascertain for sure that the tampon is not lingering inside .
And you could also go in for a transvaginal pelvic ultrasound scan and hormonal levels ( FSH, LH, TSH ) which would let you know where you stand from the menopause point of view.
All the best
