What Causes Loose Motion, Vomiting And Stomach Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, my wife is 40 years old, 5'6", 80KG, generally in good health, no regular medications. She has been suffering from stomach pain, vomiting (3 to 4 times today), loose motion (5 to 6ptimes) since morning today (for the last 14 hours). She has not eaten anything much (some curd rice once). She has been drinking lots of water and Electrol. Her stomach pain is acute now. I have given her Metrogyl 400 (1 tablet) now. I intend to take her to a physician first thing in the morning (about 10 hours from now). In the meanwhile, any quick pain relief? A nearby pharmacist suggested I also give her on OnOFF OZ. Can I do that? (active ingredients Ofloxacin, Ornidazole) Her temperature is normal.

Brief Answer:
Looks to be Gastroenteritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX XXXXXX.

Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
This looks to be a case of gastroenteritis You have already given Metrogyl 400, so do not give a combination containing Ornidazole as both of them work in the similar way. You can give plain Oflox under Doctors' guidance.

Since she has taken curd-rice, taking water and Electral, vomiting looks under control at the moment. One packet of Electral has to be diluted in one liter of boiled and cooled water or from a water purifier.

It is always better to be seen and examined by a Doctor if you have a hospital nearby. The Pulse , Blood pressure and other vitals are checked as also the physical examination of the abdomen to rule out any Emergency and appropriate injections given to stop vomiting, antibiotics and you get a proper prescription for an Antibiotic, Metronidazole, Probiotics, PPI or Ranitidine, Activated charcoal tablets; Intravenous fluids if there is dehydration and / or electrolyte imbalance. Painkillers are best avoided as they reduce the pain by relaxing the small and large intestines which can retain the infected material in them and can cause more problems. They are not contraindicated but n cause a diagnostic problem. We always give antispasmodic like dicyclomin after the physical examination is done.

Temperature being normal in such cases is not always a good sign as it is not elevated in some particular gram-negative infections and it is always a Doctor who can identify this by clinical examination. Sometimes septicemia and / bacteremia is easily missed.

Get the necessary investigations of the blood, urine, stool and ultrasonography tomorrow morning.

Wishing for an early recovery.
