What Causes Loose Stools In The Morning?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: Hello. I have loose stools every morning. I go about 2-3 times in a 30 minute period. After that I have no further issues until the next morning. I had a colonoscopy about a year ago and all was fine. I also have gas and a gurgling in my stomach. I have acid reflux and have been taking OTC Prilosec nightly for about 15 years.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Might be IBS; follow as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Loose stools in the morning are mostly associated with either inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) or irritable bowel syndrome(IBS). Other causes like malabsorption syndrome or antibiotic-associated diarrhea are much less common. You have also said that colonoscopy is normal. So IBS is most probable.
If such patient presents to me, I generally advise the following-

Dietary modification like more water, more fibre, less fat or junk food, small frequent meals, avoidance of dairy products, alcohol and smoking.
Relaxation of mind. Regular exercise or brisk walking enhances metabolism.
A 1 month course of normaxin-RT having components like clinidium, chlordiazepoxide, rabeprazole etc.
A 5day course of antibiotics like ofloxacin-ornidazole.

You can consult your treating or family doctor about prescription of the above.

Hope this was useful.
Regards.
